Project 71

An existing and well-known filling station in the coastal town of Umhlali became the catalyst to create a mixed-use fuel station, retail and commercial office space. A new, spacious forecourt layout increased the number of fuel pumps available to the public, a contemporary 24/7 convenience store allowed more interactive use for the community and visitors, while an open plan office space on the first floor wrapped in bronze aluminium weave-like screens, gives protection to the occupants from the west setting sun and became the heart of the business. This project incorporates a sustainable approach to design harnessing solar and back-up power, locally sourced materials and water harvesting methods.
